Tamea J. Levingston

Student Esthetician in Training

My name is Tamea Levingston and I will be a sophomore at Johnson County Community College. I’m pursuing a career in the beauty industry as an Esthetician. I’m passionate about all things wellness related–such as exercising, skin care, and holistic healing. During this chapter of my life I am learning how to navigate through the new and challenging times. So far I have learned the importance of embracing the unknown–even when I’m unsure about where life will take me–because all feelings are valid. I’m more than blessed to be where I am today and I’m excited about the many adventures that life has to offer.

You recently graduated from University Academy: what made your experience memorable?

The small number of students and staff at University Academy made my experience memorable. The small class sizes made it easier to bond with my peers and teachers. It was a good feeling knowing that I could (and still can!) go to the staff members for any problem/concern. University Academy has my best interest at heart–academically and personally.

You were a part of the Leadership 20/20 program: what did you like about this program and how did it prepare you for your life after high school?

I liked how 20/20 leadership allowed me to explore my interests and find my career spark. As a member of the program, I was able to learn about the variety of school and career choices that were available after high school. Exploring careers with 20/20 allowed me to understand that it’s okay to keep an open mind when choosing a career.

You are studying at Johnson County Community College: what are you hoping to do in your career? How did your high school journey prepare you?

During the 2021 Fall and the 2022 Spring semester I’ll be studying esthetics at JCCC. In my career I aspire to be a master esthetician. As a Master Esthetician, not only will I be servicing the people by enhancing their beauty on the outside, but I will also be there to enhance their beauty within–helping others boost their confidence and self-esteem! My high school journey prepared me by challenging me to think outside the box when it comes to critical thinking and problem solving. It also taught me how to manage my time wisely and how to manage stress.

Who has had the biggest influence on you throughout your school life?

My big brother, Michael, has had the biggest influence on me throughout my school life. He has supported me academically, mentally, financially, and emotionally to ensure that I have a bright future ahead of me–and for that I am forever grateful for him. He has exposed me to different career paths and different parts of the world to show me that my desires are limitless.

What example do you want to set for the younger students that look up to you? What advice would you give them?

I want to be a walking example of the phrase “work-life balance”–this is the example I want to set for the younger students that look up to me. It’s important to know how to balance the time you spend on working and the time you spend on doing things that bring you liberation. Personally, I have to ground myself by prioritizing self care first before I tend to my work. Doing this ensures that I’m able to diligently and efficiently complete any task at hand. Through experience I’ve learned that life is all about finding your balance and going through life at the pace that works for you.
